Winnington demolition moves on at a pace – Sept 2016

As part of the long term remediation project to render the former Brunner Mond site at Winnington suitable for residential development for the Winnington Urban Village Consortium, the historic industrial landmark on Wallerscote Island, formerly operated by Tata Chemicals is now in the final phase of demolition.

The former distribution and storage facility, which until mid-2015 was operating under an environment permit for the storage and distribution of Sodium Carbonate, a raw material used in a number of manufacturing processes, consisted of 5 large storage silos, both of steel and reinforced concrete structure. At a height in excess of 40m, and with the River Weaver and associated flood channel either side, the demolition methodology and environmental protection measures have been discussed and approved by both the Environment Agency and the Canal and Rivers Trust.

A pre-demolition, decommissioning clean was necessary to remove in excess of 3000tonnes of residual “soda ash” left behind following the plant shut down. A thirteen week advance programme of extraction from the silos using vacuum plant and significant manual cleaning by specialist contractors preceded the extensive high reach demolition operation, with all bar 30tonnes being used as either alternative raw materials within the cement manufacturing process at a plant in Scotland, or returned to the chemical supply chain as raw product, accounting for a very successful and sustainable 99% diversion away from landfill.

Demolition works are anticipated to be completed by late November, with no disruption to river traffic, passing the island on a daily basis.
